Race #39 – Miles of Mooresville – Mooresville NC – 06/19/09

Miles of Mooresville is a new race series presented by Queen City Timing. The first one was last night (June 19, 2009) and there will be two more this summer that will be on the third Friday nights of July and August.

There are three races on each night on the 1-mile course through downtown Mooresville: a 1-miler, a 2-miler (2 loops), and a 3-miler (3 loops). With the $18 registration fee you have the option of running either of the races or all three of them if you’d like. I noticed from the results of the first two races that 106 ran the 1-miler and 70 completed the 2-miler. We left during the 3-miler but there seemed to be probably between 50 and 70 in the final race. Since we were running the Summer Breeze 5k in Charlotte on Saturday morning, Linda and I both opted just to run the 1-miler and save a little juice for Saturday.
The course was pretty flat and there aren’t many 1-mile races I would guess a lot of 1-mile PR times were set. It was my first 1-mile race and I finished in 6:30. The temperature at race time was probably somewhere around 86 or 88 degrees so I’d like to think that with cooler temperature most of us could have run about 10 or 15 seconds faster, so that’s something to shoot for if another 1-miler comes along.
One minor disappointment was that there were no awards for anybody. I guess it would have been a job to give out awards for three different races; nevertheless, it’s one of those things most runners probably expect. As I mentioned earlier, we left during the 3-mile race. If nothing else, having some type of token awards for top finishers would keep a lot more people around until the end.
One major highlight was the gray technical T-shirt that runners received when they turned in their chip. The shirt featured the “Finish Line” abstract drawing of Mooresville that you see at the top of this blog entry. There was a “Carolina Blonde” advertisement on the left shoulder but nothing other than that, so the back of the shirt is blank, which is a nice touch. There’s also no year on the shirt, so if I wear it five years from now I won’t just look like I’m wearing an old shirt. I like that. Definitely one of the best shirts I’ve received in a race, and one of the few I’ll actually wear.
I’ve included 140+ photos from the race in a slideshow. As always, you can download the originals for free. Just click on the slideshow to access the big pictures.
