Race #32 – Hickory Crawdad Home Run Trot – Hickory NC – 05/16/09


I always have preconceived notions about how I think a race will be before I get there. Many times it’s been a bit of a letdown to find things to be not quite as expected. Not so with the Home Run Trot sponsored by the Hickory Crawdads, the Class A minor league affiliate of the Texas Rangers. My wife Linda has had a problem with shin splints lately and hasn’t been able to run, but even she had fun at the Home Run Trot.

The weather was beautiful, which always helps, and the L.P. Frans Stadium, home of the Crawdads, has to be one of the most beautiful minor league stadiums in the country. As I write this I’m not sure how many runners were in the competitive 5k race, but I would guess probably 100 to 150. That would make for a fairly small race, but there were actually several hundred more runners as Girls on the Run of Catawba County also took part in the race. As you may know, Girls on the Run is a national program for girls ages 8 to 13 that encourages healthy living and self-respect through running. Seems like it’s working fine in Catawba County and it was great to watch all of these kids finish the race and receive a finishers medal at the finish line.
Speaking of the finish line, the highlight of this race and inspiration for the name “Home Run Trot” is that you finish by crossing home plate inside the stadium. I didn’t know what to expect, but what a surprise I had when I entered the stadium. The race had been on streets surrounding the ball park, then at the end the runners entered the stadium just past 3rd base and ran to home plate from there. As I entered the stadium I was pretty much alone. I’m not sure how far the nearest runner was ahead of me but he finished quite a bit ahead, and the nearest runner behind me was about 30 seconds back. To my surprise, there were probably at least 1,000 — maybe even 2,000 — people in the seats (mostly GOTR families I would guess), cheering runners on as they crossed the finish line. I think I was the 8th finisher overall in the race (23:01) and first in the old-guy-athon, and what a reception I received as I came to the finish line… you would have thought I just hit one out of the park!
All of the runners received two tickets to tonight’s baseball game, where the top male and female runners are also throwing out the first pitch, and those of us who came in first in our age groups received an official Crawdads baseball that was autographed by the entire team! The after-race food was good and included fresh strawberries and pastries from Panera Bread in addition to normal stuff like bananas, oranges, and bagels. The T-shirts were really nice and professionally designed with the cool Crawdads logo on the front and no advertising on the back.

Race #566 - Run the South Half Marathon - Charlotte NC - 06/29/24

Touted as the "Hottest Half Here," the Run the South Half Marathon lived up to its billing this year. The temperature at the beginning of the race wasn't unbearable at 77 degrees, and even the humidity wasn't 100% (it was 88% according to the weather app). I think maybe the culprit was the dew point, although I don't know what it was. I do know that I was sticky and sweaty before the race and didn't even do a warmup.  I'm not sure I've explained how I use the Jeff Galloway Run Walk Run technique. I keep my watch set to alert me every 20 seconds, so I can run 20 seconds then walk 20 seconds, and that's how I do most of my training. In races, I run however many 20-second intervals I'm comfortable with and then just walk 20 seconds in between, so I may run three 20-second intervals (1 minute) or six 20-second intervals (2 minutes) then walk 20 seconds before running again. Race #570 - Asheville Half Marathon - Asheville, NC - 08/24/24

This was my 14th half marathon this year, in a year that I'm hoping to run 20+. Unfortunately, as I write this a week after the race, I'm not feeling as gung-ho as I did when the year began. I'm already thinking of how miserable the cold weather races will feel, thus making it easy for me to back out in less-than-ideal weather conditions.  This was the first half marathon I ran on the comeback trail a year ago, but it was before I restarted the blog, so I only have my Garmin Connect and Strava data to help me remember it. I finished last year's race in 2:06:49, and this year, I was a little slower at 2:09:29, but I did finish 1st in the 70-74 age group this year as opposed to 2nd last year. The stat that stood out most to me is that this race had 913 finishers last year and only 503 this year! Race #111 – Southpark Turkey Trot – Charlotte, NC – 11/25/10

The 22nd annual Charlotte Southpark Turkey Trot had 4300 finishers in the 8k race on Thanksgiving day. Add to that those involved with the 5k walk, the 1-mile fun run, and the tot trot, and this is easily one of Charlotte’s largest road racing events of the year, second only to Thunder Road. This is the 4th race in the 10-race season of the Running Journal Grand Prix series and is one of the three RJ Grand Prix races in North Carolina, with the others being the Charlotte RaceFest 10k and the Asheville Citizen-Times Half Marathon. The other races in the series are in South Carolina, Alabama, Tennessee, and Florida, so it’s nice to try to pick up some points without leaving the area. Linda and I enjoyed traveling around to most of the different races last year and are planning to run most of the remaining races this year as well. Race #564 - RAD Half Marathon - Asheville NC - 06/09/24

Back during the years when I was doing my best running (2009-2017), the half marathon was my favorite race distance. During those years, I ran as many as 16 half marathons per year, and on an age-graded basis, the half marathon was my best distance. In more recent years I had trouble running long distances, so I cut the number of half marathons down and almost quit running them entirely. When my streak of 120 half marathons in a row under 2 hours ended in September 2022, I considered never running another half. It wasn't so much that finishing in over 2 hours was shameful, but I began having difficulty running the distance.  I turned 71 in February 2023 and had only run two 5k races after the previously mentioned September half marathon. Not being a cold weather runner anyway, I waited until April of 2023 to run another 5k, and by then my 5k times were slower than ever. Race #567 - Koala Bottle Harbison Half Marathon - Columbia, SC - 07/07/24

Well, that was interesting. In my zeal to run at least 20 half marathons this year, I found this one at the last minute and signed up. It was only about 100 miles away, so I could click off another half marathon with just a couple hours of driving.  I signed up right away, not bothering to read the race description. The next day (the day before the race), I found out it was a singletrack trail complete with plenty of roots, rocks, and obstacles that a roadrunner like myself is not used to running.  It was hot and muggy, with a dew point of 75, although being a warm-weather runner, I'd prefer that over 40 degrees any day. Before hitting the actual trail, the race began on a dirt road, and I could have stopped to walk but decided to try to keep running until I saw someone else walking.
