Race #137 - Run/Walk for the Greenway - Salisbury, NC - 07/23/11
If there had been another race around we would have probably ended up there instead, but having made the trip for the 14th Annual Run/Walk for the Greenway I'm really glad we ended up in Salisbury. It's a first class 5k race all the way: a beautiful course mostly on the greenway with a nice finish on the school track, great organization with lots of volunteers, plenty of food (donuts, chicken nuggets, and lots of good stuff), beautiful trophies, a ton of nice door prizes given out just before the awards, and a nice size crowd of 246 finishers.
It was hot, of course, as you would expect in July, and being one of the hottest days of the summer it was pretty steamy at the 8 a.m. start. Because of the heat, many of the runners I talked to felt like their times were a little off. I felt good and won my age group but was a little disappointed that my 21:07 time was actually 19 seconds slower than a 5k tempo run I did on the treadmill just two days ago. Maybe that's not surprising considering it was cooler inside on the treadmill and although the hills weren't bad at all in the race, the treadmill with a 1% incline all the way was pretty flat.

Yeah, I'm glad we drove over an hour too for this race! I agree-great course(the track finish was perfect since I usually have a kick at the end of a race and I do track workouts every Tues! I caught up to and suprised 3 people by flying by them!) The food, flavored water, raffles and really unique awards with silver metal leaves and a pic of the bridge! And of course, the comraderie was a blast post-race!
ReplyDeleteGreat race, Richard! The heat has been crazy recently - we had temps in the high 90's in a nighttime 5k this weekend in Columbia. You inspired me to incorporate my runners world forum race reports into my own blog: http://drachtungbaby.wordpress.com/
ReplyDeleteThe Capital City Safe 5k was that race - most people were at least 30 seconds off.
Hey Alex... I heard about that race in Columbia that was so hot. Didn't know you had a blog... I just added it to my blog list. Wow, you've come a long way on those race times in the past couple of years!
