New Blog Name -- It's Now "TheOldRunner.com"

A funny thing happened recently when I wasn't looking. I forgot to renew the name "old-runner.com" and for some reason it was snatched up by someone who thought it would be a great name, so I no longer own it. Okay, I'm not married to the name, and actually I was a little tired of telling people there was a hyphen between the words "old" and "runner" when they asked for the address of my blog.

After a little brainstorming I decided to stay fairly close to the original name and since it was available I decided on getting "theoldrunner.com" (or it's okay to capitalize the first letter of each word, like "TheOldRunner.com" to get to the blog. It's still just a Blogspot blog with the address being redirected to the blog, but if you're interested you can now get to this blog using a little easier-to-remember address. And yes, I know I'm not THE Old Runner... there's a bunch of us. But for now I've licensed the name, at least until I forget to renew it.

Race #251 - Cherry Blossom 5k - Cherryville, NC - 04/25/14

Pros: First race of the Gaston County YMCA series. Friday evening small-town race close to home. Held in conjunction with the town's Cherry Blossom Festival. Hot pizza post race! 5-year age groups to 75+ Cons: Several runners kept going straight at a turn that was either not marked or was very poorly marked, and there was no volunteer posted at the turn. I would have missed it too if not for a runner ahead of me being familiar with the turn. I finished 11th overall in the race and 4 runners who were ahead of me missed the turn and finished behind me. Not sure how many behind me missed it but it was definitely an issue. Hilly course, but there's probably not much that could be done to make it flatter. Slow race for me (I walked four times) but I'm not great at evening races anyway. Race #164 - Myrtle Beach Half Marathon - Myrtle Beach, SC - 02/18/12

For the second year in a row the weather was just about perfect for the Myrtle Beach Marathon, Half Marathon, and 5k. Last year was my first year to run the half although I was also there the previous year (2010) on that notoriously cold and wintry weekend when the race was canceled because of a freak snowstorm. This year though, just like last year, it was a little chilly at the start and by the time the race ended the temperature was up around 60 degrees and before the day was over we were able to enjoy a couple hours at the beach before heading home Saturday afternoon. I didn't have any huge aspirations for this race since lately I haven't been running quite as well as I did last fall. With last year's time of 1:34:19 I ended up in 4th place in the 55-59 age group and I thought it would be great to finish in the top 3 in the age group this year but in a race this size that draws a lot of top runners from all over I knew that wouldn't be easy or likely. Race #73 – Black Mountain Valentine Run 5k – Black Mountain, NC – 02/20/10

Last week our half marathon in Myrtle Beach was snowed out, and fortunately for us, so were all the rest of the races in the Carolinas, and many of those races were rescheduled for this week. There were some good races in the Charlotte area that we hated to miss, but there were a couple in Asheville that were part of the Asheville Track Club Grand Prix series. I’m trying to run at least ten of the ATC GP races this year so we headed for the mountains. As you might expect, the weather was a little cooler up in Asheville than Charlotte, but it was still in the mid to upper 50s and both races were in the afternoon during the warmest part of the day. As we approached Asheville everything was still white with the snow that has been falling for the past month in the North Carolina mountains, but by Sunday afternoon the unseasonably mild temperatures had erased most of the evidence that it was still winter. Wow! — There’s a 5K Race EVERY Saturday?

With the risk of sounding like I’ve been under a rock somewhere for the last 30 years or so, I didn’t know that there were 5k races all over the place every week. I had heard about them occasionally but never paid much attention. I started checking some of the running websites and found listings for races every week within a 50-mile radius of Gastonia, and being able to run a race every week was just what I needed to stay motivated. It’s been eight weeks since that first 5k race in Hildebran, and every Saturday since then I’ve been in a race. Six times I’ve placed either 1st, 2nd, or 3rd in my age division, which is great but I know I’ve got a long way to go to be among the very best runners, even in my age division. It could very well be that I’m too old to really improve that much or just don’t have the natural ability, but that’s okay if that’s the case. Race #85 – Crawdads Home Run Trot 5k – Hickory, NC – 05/08/10

In the immortal words of Randy Jackson, “You know I’m a fan, but it was just all right for me Dog.” Sad to say that compared to last year’s Home Run Trot, which was one of my favorite races of the whole year, this one seemed a little pitchy (no pun intended). As we drove up to the stadium about 40 minutes before the start of the race, the first thing I noticed was that there was only a fraction of the crowd in attendance compared to last year. We soon found out that this year they decided to have the Girls on the Run race after the 5k. That was disappointing because, although they weren’t counted in with the regular runners, last year the hundreds of girls ran along with the other runners in the 5k and with all of their friends and families in attendance the crowd support was great. This year, not so much. Last year as I entered the stadium and ran down the third base line I received an ovation that sounded like I just hit a grand slam.
