My First Attempt at a Running Program

According to the running log I started on March 4, 2008, here’s how the first day of my running program began. My entry read: “Beginning running program. Run-walk on treadmill. Ran .1 mile and walked .1 mile for 30 minutes.” That week I ran a total of 6.2 miles, and feeling pretty good about myself the following week I ran 9.3 miles — three different 3.1 (5k) runs with times ranging from 38:30 to 42:30. The following Tuesday was the final entry: 3.1 miles at a time of 41 minutes. As I remember it, I had painful shin splints that had me limping the whole way. I talked to Nicole on the phone and gave her the news that the old man was just too old to start a running program and wouldn’t be training for a 5k after all.

Race #468 -- Around the Crown 10k -- Charlotte, NC -- 09/01/19

This was the inaugural year of the Around the Crown 10k and it was quite the extravaganza. There was a ton of hype in the months leading up to the race, and when race day came the hype seemed to pay off. There were around 4,000 finishers, making it one of Charlotte's biggest races in its first year. The big draw was that I-277, the loop around uptown Charlotte, was being closed off for the first time to allow runners to race on it. I arrived over an hour before the start but so did a couple thousand other people. I could have parked in the dirt lot just below the baseball stadium for six bucks but decided to go around the block and see if I could do better on parking. That was a bad idea and I fell in line with everybody else going into the big parking garage closest to the stadium. Not only did it cost me $12 to park there, but after the race it took me an hour and a half to get out of the garage! That's a mistake I won't make next year. The race itself was a lot of...

The Finish Line

After 15 years of having fun (mostly) at the races, it's finally time for me to hang up my running shoes. The last race I blogged about was #574, but I ran two more after that: the Ocean Isle Beach Half Marathon on October 25, 2024, and the Police Donut 5k the following week on November 2, 2024. After the half marathon, I felt generally fine, but the following week, I began having some back pain. I managed to run the Donut 5k without too much of a problem and felt pretty good despite having to eat a half dozen donuts halfway through the race. The day after the donut race, I took the day off since my back was hurting, and my right leg had also become painful. To make a long story short, over the next couple of weeks, I became unable to walk or even stand without extreme pain. I ended up seeing an orthopedic surgeon, who did an MRI that revealed a stress fracture in my right tibia, and a spine doctor, whose MRI showed a severely pinched nerve at L4. Race #467 -- Apple Festival 8k -- Hendersonville, NC -- 08/31/19

This is my fourth year in a row to run this great 8k in the mountain town of Hendersonville. It's always well managed, and while the course does feel a little hilly, the elevation map says it's really not all that bad. I've won my age group all four times I've run it, but keeping me humble is George Luke, who's now 79 years old and has beaten me 3 of those 4 years, this time by about a minute. He's a phenomenal runner and holds multiple South Carolina state records. It'll be interesting to see how he does next year at 80 years old. I'd love to see him demolish some of the 80+ records. I'm writing this on Thursday following the race and the site says photos will be coming soon so I'm counting on that in my race rating. They always have some great photos taken by the local camera club and I talked for several minutes to two of the photographers whom I'd met before, so I might come back and update this post with a photo or two after the pics...

Race #211 - Charlotte RaceFest Half Marathon - Charlotte, NC - 04/13/13

It's Tuesday morning as I write this, three days after the RaceFest Half Marathon and a day after the finish line bombing of the Boston Marathon. As it is with most other people, my thoughts and prayers are with the people who were there, which included quite a few of my running friends. It's early still so not a lot is known but I'm sure much more will be uncovered soon about the motivation behind it, so I won't say a lot, but what a screwy world we live in today. Crossing the finish line might never be quite the same again. The RaceFest Half Marathon and 10k is one of Charlotte's big running events of the spring season and I always look forward to it. I opted for the half marathon, my third in the past four weeks, and it looked like it might be a reunion of sorts for the age group rivalry among me and Butch Holt and Bob Nelson. It turned out that Butch is just getting back into shape after a heart procedure and is running great but chose to run the shorter 10...
